The Cases That Haunt Us

The Cases That Haunt Us

CBS News is running a story by Stephanie Slifer today about the most serial notorious killer of all time: Jack the Ripper. The occasion is the 125th anniversary tomorrow of the brutal slaughter of Mary Ann Nichols, the first of the series of predatory sexual “Whitechapel Murders” that terrorized London’s destitute East End in the late summer and fall of 1888. Ms. Slifer’s intriguing piece accurately describes the first detailed behavioral and psychological profile of the Ripper, created by John Douglas when he headed the FBI’s Investigative Support Unit.

The only part of the story with which I would take issue is the statement that the crimes remain unsolved and the identity of the killer remains unknown.

We believe we’ve solved it and know the identity of the killer.

Stacey Rambold & Judge G. Todd Baugh

Stacey Rambold & Judge G. Todd Baugh

The latest judicial outrage to come to our attention is the sentence handed down by Yellowstone County, Montana, District Court Judge G. Todd Baugh. That, of course, is right and proper. But more than that, it is incumbent upon those of us who were alive then to remind those who weren’t what it was all about and why it was even necessary. Because that day was about more than just soaring and inspirational rhetoric.

Sperm Fertilizing an Egg

Sperm Fertilizing an Egg

What makes someone a father? Is it simply fertilizing an egg or is there more to it?

In what can only be described as an outrageous perversion of justice, the Massachusetts judicial system is considering the petition of a convicted rapist for visitation and other parental rights for the daughter produced by his rape of a 14-year-old acquaintance. If this is not re-victimization with court sanction, we don’t know what is.

President Obama speaking about Trayvon Martin

President Obama speaking about Trayvon Martin

Outrage over the senseless shooting death of Australian Christopher Lane by three depraved and soulless teens has prompted vocal and vehement commentary from many quarters and even a call from some Australian officials for their countrymen and women not to visit the United States. This is all natural and understandable.

But unless I have missed it, there has been no public statement from the White House or President Obama on the scale of his remarks on the Trayvon Martin case.

Why not?
