Kyle Bruner

We have been extremely moved by the outpouring of sympathy and admiration for Kyle Bruner, the 33-year-old son of my high school friend Rick Bruner, who was murdered in the Bahamas while heroically coming to the defense of a woman being attacked. We have also been gratified that Bahamian police quickly made an arrest in the case.

Here is Rick’s update on the latest developments:

Mark, they now have four men in custody and are searching for a fifth in connection to my son’s murder. It appears this was a criminal gang that police think were behind dozens, maybe hundreds of armed robberies in Nassau over the past few years. The outrage over his death brought people forward to give information to the police, which has allowed them to extend the investigation and find the other members of the gang, all of whom are being charged with murder.

Murder is the greatest waste of individual human potential known to mankind, and it is a crime we can never get over. Still, we always try to find some meaning and significance in the tragedy, and Kyle’s death gives us at least two.

First, to offset the worst of human behavior and selfishness, he provided a magnificent example of the best – of selflessness and courage.

And second, if outrage over his death could be translated into action by people fed up with crime, then his example will ripple out in incalculable ways forever.

Life spent in a ciminal gang is a terrible waste too. It’s all such a shame. I hope that positive change continues to come from this in the community where it happened.

Fingers crossed the track down the fifth. Thanks for the update and I’m relieved to see some justice being served here. It must bring some consolation to Kyle’s family.
