Despite our best efforts, there will never be a 100% foolproof way of preventing school shootings and other mass murders. The only conceivable way would be a total ban on firearms, which is not going to happen. And even that would only cut down on the body count since numerous other weapons are still available. But that doesn’t mean we should just throw up our hands and do nothing.
Getting Their Man
We have been writing a lot lately about what’s wrong in law enforcement. But for those of us who study criminal justice, here’s a genuine feel-good story.
Empathy for Raffaele
Amanda Knox’s ordeal with the miscarriage of Italian justice has been horrible for her and her family and disgusting to all of us who value truth. The high Court of Cassation’s unbelievable ruling in ordering a new trial in the murder of Meredith Kercher has compounded the tragedy. But as horrible as it is for Amanda, at least she is an American citizen, back home on American soil, and protected by American laws. Not so for her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who is an Italian citizen and resident with no refuge from this travesty. Our empathy goes out to him. He’s already suffered more than enough for a crime of which he is completely and demonstrably innocent.

This article was originally supposed to be published for Il Messaggero. It was given to me as an assignment, after the editor and legal expert of the newspaper saw the Maxim interview with famed FBI profiler, John Douglas, in the January 2011 issue.
When the article was turned in, albeit shortened, my editor told me – “We can’t print this article. It’s too dangerous to print in Italy”.
So, for your reading pleasure, the article too dangerous for Italy.
How Italian Police Attempted to Sink Amanda Knox
When Italian police released this photo, many in the media and public wondered how an innocent Amanda Knox possibly could have missed a bloody scene this obvious when she entered the bathroom. But the red stains on the sink, cabinet and toilet are not blood, but rather the results fuming for latent fingerprints with cyanoacrylate and a staining reagent.
