Suzann Collins & Sedley Alley

In the photo insert of our new book, LAW & DISORDER, there are facing pictures of Suzanne Marie Collins on the left and Sedley Alley on the right. The image of Ms. Collins is an official U.S. Marine Corps photograph, a portrait taken just after she completed boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina in August 1984. With a waving Stars and Stripes in the background, the trim, light-haired eighteen-year-old beauty is in her uniform and eagle, globe and anchor cap, smiling at her hard-won accomplishment. She hoped her future endeavors in the corps would lead to her twin dreams: to graduate from the Naval Academy and be part of the first class of female Marine fighter pilots.

Robert Gleanson Jr

Robert Gleason, Jr.

A little after 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, forty-two year-old Robert Gleason, Jr. was executed at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. He opted for electrocution over the now more widely used lethal injection. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to the recent massacre in Connecticut, a target of choice of the mass shooter is often a school. This is due to a variety of factors, one of which is the fact that schools are filled with unarmed, innocent civilians. While a variety of different proposals have been introduced, one solution that is currently being utilized by law enforcement and school officials is practicing the Active Shooter Scenario.

Kasandra Perkins & Jovan Belcher

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

In the wake of the tragic and horrific murder-suicide perpetrated by the Kansas City Chiefs’ Jovan Belcher against his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and then himself, the question of gun control again assumes a prominent place in the public discourse. It is a pattern as regular as clockwork whenever there is a highly publicized gun tragedy, and these tragedies themselves have become all too regular in our society.

So what can we say about all of this with any degree of confidence? Only one thing.

OJ Simpson & Glen Rogers

The recent uproar over claims that convicted serial killer Glen Rogers was the actual murderer of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in Brentwood, California, in 1994 demonstrates what’s wrong with our collective attitudes toward criminal justice. We certainly believe in returning to and studying past crimes, but only if the exercise can move us closer to truth, which this one certainly does not.
