With the death last week in California of convicted killer Richard Ramirez, people are once again asking us about the mind and motivation of the “Night Stalker.” For example, since the monster who murdered at least 13, attempted to murder at least five others and sexually assaulted at least 11, claimed he was motivated by Satan, how can we say there is no such thing as satanic ritual murder, as we have claimed in the West Memphis Three and Amanda Knox murder trials?
But there is also something we want to know.
Why is a 53-year-old man who has been on death row at San Quentin for more than 23 years, dying of natural causes, specifically liver failure, rather than lethal injection in the death chamber?
At the time of Ramirez’s sentencing, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Tynan noted that the defendant had displayed “crusty, callousness and viciousness beyond any human understanding.”
He was on death row long enough to marry a nutcase fan who told CNN in 1997, “He’s kind, he’s funny, he’s charming. I think he’s a really great person. He’s my best friend; he’s my buddy.”
The shameful fact is that as a killer, Ramirez is not alone, either in attracting misguided, inadequate women or living long enough on death row to die of natural causes. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Ramirez is the 59th inmate to die this way, added to 22 others who committed suicide.
If Richard Ramirez’s crimes are not hideous enough to have him permanently removed from society in a legally reasonable period of time, whose are?
If California is squeamish about the death penalty, legislators and voters ought to get rid of it. As it is, they are making a mockery of justice and it is an outrage.
This is in response to the comment about Criminal Minds. Sir, that show is nothing like the BAU. It’s laughable you think murderers would learn anything from it. That show is pure Hollywood fiction. I’ve read all of the books by Mr Douglass, Mr Ressler and Mr Hazelwood and I’ve watched the show. You can’t get any further from reality.
I am not sure exactly what is going on with CDC, does the Governor not take our citizenship into consideration? For example I have sent many emails to San Louis Obispo, about setting a date for the execution of a convicted serial rapist and killer Rex Krebs. My argument is simple, he killed two college students and potentially Kristen Smart and has been sentenced to die, not live on our tax dollars which already were spent to find him and convict him but he was given appeals and all of which are now exhausted. The family also is due the justice they were told they would receive in court. Now is because I do not work for the Department of Justice that my plea to them is ignored, is because they forget he is on death row? I think it may be as simple as a filing error. In the grand scheme of death row, who exactly sets the dates for execution? I think California has done a terrible job at serving justice.
The best example is the 1967-1969 murders committed by the “Manson Family” and who all were sentenced to death. The overturning of this death sentence can be used by B-33920; Manson to convince the weak minded he in fact is Jesus Christ as he has claimed to them. Moreover, putting the Tate family, through 27 parole hearings and granting Charles Manson and the other family members internet access like facebook, is not only an injustice it is extremely dangerous. The system needs to change out there and it takes Republicans in office to do it, I find that not only were they up for parole after 7 years but a less well known member was up for parole in 2012 also, his name is Ed Kemper. These men are the most deadly and dangerous prisoners in the history of our country. And the families continue to be victimized by lack of decisive action, the reason must be that those in the position to set dates for death row inmates whom have 0 appeals left are not forwarding it through the chains, this will change if I am able to attain a position such as the great men of the FBI who put them away had. Those men like John Douglas, Robert Ressler and the man who created VICAP Peirce Brooks; who passed away in 1998.
We must start using our deterrence in California because the defense lawyers in the Manson parole setting argue about rehabilitation and have forgotten we do not incarcerate merely for rehabilitation, I would like to tell that woman who advocated the parole of Susan Atkins one thing. Go back to law school, your client should be dead. Instead the lovely Tate family has had to fight not only to keep them in prison but to keep others from glorifying their horrendous crimes. Doris Tate did a lot of good in CDC and Patti Tate was just as strong, now that Doris was taken in 1992 and Patti in 2002 the burden falls to Debra Tate alone. But there was divine justice in the case of Susan Atkins when she died of brain cancer just like the mother of the woman she murdered and had to do so in prison. The best part was the only thing standing between her and freedom was Arnold Schwarzenegger, the son of an Austrian whose father was a Nazi Storm Trooper! So Charles Manson if that doesn’t put you in your place Our Lord will, just like Richard Ramirez who is now the victim.
But I have a lot of ambition to push these ideas of mine along and save lives but the truth is you have to make a change from the inside. No one cares how good you are these days they only seem concerned with the political and social order of their voter. That makes me mad, Rex Krebs I want to see die by lethal injection that is the sentence now CDC do it. But if they still are there when I make Federal Agent I am going to pull some federal strings for these families because no one else seems concerned. I am and I love each of them like my own, rest assured Debra Tate your legacy far outlives that of Charles Manson. I will lay my life down to ensure it, and I am good at my job I just haven’t convinced the system that yet. I need this job so to the victims and agents who read this keep me in your prayers, I won’t see the BAU you all created become a bureaucrats staging ground for reelection. I hold you all in the highest regard, I hope the feeling is mutual. If not I still respect you but we need to realize the FBI is not what it was when you created the BAU. We must revitalize it, that is my thought on the whole spectrum of CDC and that is just the beginning.
Nice job on the post and it probably would remain silent had an agent not said it was because the media seem to sell only tragedy, sell the deterrence not the criminal act alone.
And get Criminal Minds of the air, that show makes a lot smarter criminals. I think it exposes the BAU and it needs to be considered to those seeking to stop murder, like us.
You are very wrong about that show. It’s fictional and doesn’t base it’s “profilers” on the real profilers like John Douglass. The writers changed everything to make the show more glamorous.
