Despite our best efforts, there will never be a 100% foolproof way of preventing school shootings and other mass murders. The only conceivable way would be a total ban on firearms, which is not going to happen. And even that would only cut down on the body count since numerous other weapons are still available. But that doesn’t mean we should just throw up our hands and do nothing.
Documents recently released on the final days of Connecticut elementary school shooter Adam Lanza show a similar pattern of alarming and emotionally aberrant behavior to that of Arizona mass killer Jared Loughner – sitting home all day playing violent video games, keeping a large cache of weapons and ammunition in the house and virtually no socialization. There are almost always behavioral indicators. But given that this individual was so withdrawn and housebound, his danger signs would have been even more difficult to pick up than Loughner’s.
In our research and from the cases I’ve worked, fantasy is a major component within the mind of a troubled person with low self-esteem, as well as feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Some will internalize these feelings and become self-destructive, taking their own lives or turning to alcohol, drugs and/or prostitution. Then there are others who desire nothing more than to get rid of their problems by destroying the enemies that exist only in their imaginations.
The only way to deal with these individuals and get them help before tragedy occurs is to make others – parents, teachers, friends – aware of signs of potential violence, then offer them a secure, confidential and non-stigmatizing environment in which to share their fears with officials in the position to do something. This also implies that we need the resources and support structure to help out once potentially dangerous individuals have been identified.
This won’t stop all mass violence. It may not even stop most of it. But it would be foolish as well as immoral to sit by and do nothing at all.
Sorry I listened to BAU-2 and I am analyzing the crimes they do I just feel so far from achieving the place they have and I want that very much. I feel better but I need to really be able to finish what I start in college and research. It frustrates me that I can not help only because I am a student.
Here is what we show this kid if we act to slow in the previous shooting in the case of James Holmes. He was guilty and this burden of proof in the states case took far to long. Long enough that this was allowed to be seen as a type of act we are familiar with and one we give a due process of and never publicly deter the offences but sell the murders. These ignorant media tactics must stop, I see this as an attack against all that is good and worth fighting for. I see it as it is, a young man raised by parents like Ed Kempers or John Reulas who are also bad and this boy having a weak mind and no heart is a target for those like Charles Manson who still have shown they are a criminal mafia that sanctions murders against innocent lives and here it is unforgivable. To think BTK, Manson, Falco, Bundy, Ridgeway and Atkins feel this is not the direct result of the Zodiac killings is patently ridicules. Your looking at the chance to help a family in justice because other can not and that act causes these? Dennis Rader you gave enough to warrant a court order for DNA, I want to see you die in California. I also want you to know I see what your doing and it if you wanted a dangerous game then you got it. The problem is I was one man not an army using an OPORD to kill and teach others in the military to like Israel Keyes. I am smarter than you Dennis and this will show when the signature you had of semen is the death of you and then the Bright’s, Otero’s all will see how hard some fight for them against you. This kid is mook and your murder dies with you and your family I am certain I can end the sadistic murders but I need help.
